Joe A. Smith, age 85, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, May 23, 2012. Joe is survived by his wife of 65 and a half years, Edith Smith, three daughters, Judy Nelms of San Antonio, Texas, Janice Henderson of Albuquerque and Katrina Stovall and her husband, Clarence of Wylie, Texas, grandchildren, Dennis Nelms, Robert Henderson, Lori Henderson, Christopher Nelms, Jennifer Nelms, Scott Munoz and Shawn Chavez; great-grandchildren, Isiah, Ian, Elizabeth, Sam, Steven, Anthony, Allen, Skylette, Clare, Jorja and Travis and many other family and friends. Joe, the last surviving child of Sam and Eula Smith, was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Ben Smith, Buck Smith and Ray Smith and three sisters, Bonnie Seely, Willie Pearl Crider and Peggy Smith. Joe was a truck driver for over 38 years driving more than five million miles for Hill Freight Line and ICX before retiring. Joe was a member of Northeast Church of Christ, a wonderful story teller, an avid fan of old Westerns, and handy with tools, woodcrafts and gardening. Joe ("Daddy" or "Papa Joe") will be dearly missed by his family and friends who may visit on Friday, May 25, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at French Lomas. Funeral services for Joe will be held in Albuquerque at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 26, 2012, at Northeast Church of Christ, 11000 Paseo Del Norte Blvd NE, followed by a burial at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, 924 Menaul Blvd NE, and a reception at Northeast Church of Christ. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Robert Henderson, Christopher Nelms, Scott Munoz, and Shawn Chavez, and great-grandsons, Steven Sandy and Sam Henderson.
