Smith, Ben

Ben Smith July 16, 1923 — July 13, 2009 The Smith family mourns the loss of their patriarch, Ben Smith, a man who left a legacy of faith, patriotism and morality. Papa Ben loved his children, grandchildren and great children. When the family was all together you would find him sitting in the floor playing with the kids. He loved all eight of them, but you could almost visibly see that those two great granddaughters had him wrapped around their little fingers. They were in his words, "his little darlings." His grandsons will greatly miss getting "scobbed," "whiskered," and being called "hoss." Ben was born in Sterling July 16, 1923 to Thomas Allen (Sam) and Eula Mae Smith. He was the oldest of eight children. He married Blanche Loretta Cook on July 3, 1943. Everyone who met them knew that she was the love of his life, and they were a great example of marriage and family for 65 years. They had lived in Duncan for over 50 years before moving to the Oklahoma City area. He was a charter member of New Hope Baptist Church West and his Sunday school class. Ben was saved in the living room of his home on Woodlawn in 1952 and has been a member of the Baptist Church ever since. He taught Sunday school for several years at both Bible Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church.Ben was drafted into the Army on May 24, 1944 and served his beloved country in Japan and the Philippines until Feb. 4, 1946. During his brave service, he was awarded the Purple Heart, received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, and a Good Conduct Medal. After leaving the Army, Ben worked for several years farming in Roswell, New Mexico and then was employed by Halliburton Company as a machinist in 1950. He retired in 1983 as a shift foreman after 33 years of service The family lived in over 20 homes in the Duncan area as Ben would remodel until it was time to sell and start on a new project!Upon retirement Ben and Loretta bought a camper and spent countless hours camping and fishing. They especially loved to go with Loretta's sister Deloris and her family on their yearly camping trip to Lake Texhoma or just out to Lake Humphries for weeks on end.Ben was ready to go to his eternal home after losing his wife eight months ago and is survived by his son: Joe Smith and wife Jana, of New Braunfels, Texas; his daughter: Phyllis Ammer and her husband Val of Oklahoma City; a nephew whom he loved like a son: David Tucker of McKinney, Texas; his grandsons: Todd Smith and wife Linda, of New Braunfels, Texas and Trent Smith and wife Tammy of Azle, Texas; granddaughters: Michele Turner and husband Darrin of Edmond and Allison Brown and husband Kevin of Moore.
