James Robert Hundley


James Robert Hundley, D.V.M., 85, of Heathsville passed away Friday, May 18, 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Sturgis Hundley and Almeda Clarke Hundley, brother, Ralph and sisters, Annette, Irma, Almeda, and Lelia, and granddaughter, Emily Gayle Marston. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Charlotte Delano Hundley, daughters, Gayle and husband Samuel Marston, Jane and husband, Harold Katernick, and Nan Sturgis Hundley; grandchildren, Sarah, James, and Philip Marston, Delphine and Estelle Heron, and great grandchildren, Landon James Levitt, Caison Gunnar Marston, and Lauren Elizabeth Marston.
Dr. Hundley attended Virginia Tech and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Georgia in 1956. He established the first veterinary animal hospital in Heathsville, the county seat of his native, Northumberland County in 1957. His practice served the entire Northern Neck and expanded to include clinics in Kilmarnock and Warsaw. He was the recipient of the Northern Neck Humane Society Award in 1999, and was an honor roll member of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Dr. Hundley was a member of the St. Stephens's Anglican Church and former member, vestryman, senior warden and trustee of St. Stephen's Episcopal. He was past president of the Northumberland Lions Club, past Master of the Heathsville Masonic Lodge, and past District Deputy Grand Master of the 9th Masonic District of Virginia, a member of the Scottish Rite and Acca Temple Shrine, and charter member of Rappatomic Shrine Club.
In World War II, he served as a paratrooper of the 11th Airborne in Occupied Japan from 1945-1948, and baseball player for the Far East Inter-Command Championship baseball team.
Dr. Hundley was a member of the American Rose Society, served as a master consulting rosarian and horticultural judge, a member of the Richmond Rose Society, past President of the Northern Neck Rose Society, and an honorary member of the Garden Club of the Northern Neck of Virginia.
A funeral service in celebration of Jim's life and resurrection to eternal life was held Monday, May 21 at 11 a.m. at O.A. Brinkley Hall of First Baptist Church (3585 Courthouse Rd, Heathsville), the transitional home of St. Stephen's Anglican Church. His burial followed at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church cemetery. The family received friends at Oakley, the Hundley home in Heathsville immediately following the burial.
