George Washington Powell was born to Dr David Ellis Powell and Lucinda Shoemaker (Schumacher). He married Virginia F Quigley on January 27, 1869. He died of diabetes on 24 January 1912.

Geo. W. Powell, father of Mrs. C. P. Blackwell, died yesterday morning at the home of his daughter, xxx Chipeta avenue, of diabetes. Deceased was 61 years of age. Mr. Powell had been in the city but a short time, coming here from San Miguel county. He had been sick for some time, his illness developing a critical stage during the past week. The funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Krohn chapel with interment in the Orchard Mesa cemetery. Rev. S. B. Warner of the Methodist church had charge of the services.
