Roy was born in Robinson, Texas, to the late James Otto and Ida Mae (Ludwick) Hyde. He married Alice Dunn, on July 7, 1952, in Waco and they were blessed with three daughters. He was a World War II Army veteran, and was a member of the Turtle Association, later known as Rodeo Cowboy Association (RCA). Roy was known as one of the best bull riders in the Waco area. He worked for T.P. & L. for 35 years, retiring in 1985. Roy and Alice were members and leaders of Patton Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Burnell Jurecka and Maurin Key; and brothers, J.L. Hyde and Dewey Hyde.
Survivors include his wife, Alice; daughters, Cheryl Taylor and husband, Roland, Tina Hyde, and Renea Hyde Flores; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Bill Hyde and wife, Velma, and Harold Hyde and wife, Loretta; and numerous nieces and nephews, other family members and many friends.
