Edith Violet (Weybright) Boruff
Nov. 7, 1893 - May 24, 1997

Edith Weybright Boruff moved to Cleveland, Ohio, as a newlywed in 1919 so that her husband, Glenn, could take a job at General Electric Co.'s Nela Park plant.

While her husband worked at Nela Park, Mrs. Boruff would take a streetcar to her job at the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co.

She later worked as a teacher in Euclid.

She had worked in the war effort during World War I as a cablegram librarian for the War Trade Board.

During World War II, she worked at the B-29 bomber plant, now the International Exposition Center, as a rivet inspector.

She went back to school, earning a degree in history and elementary education at Indiana University and started a second career as a third grade teacher at Scranton Elementary School in Cleveland, where she taught until she retired in 1961 at age 68.

Mrs. Boruff, 103, died May 24 at Bloomington Convalescent Center in Bloomington, Ind., where she had lived the last four years.

She was born in West Milton, Ohio, and soon moved to Bloomington, where she graduated from Bloomington High School.

She returned to Ohio to teach at a one-room schoolhouse in Salt Creek for five years, before returning to Bloomington to teach junior high school.

She lived for more than 60 years in Lakewood, where she was a member of Lakewood Christian Church.

After her husband died in 1965, she lived alone at her home on Marlow Ave. for many years, growing roses and geraniums and making apple sauce. She also kept an eye on some rental property she owned in Bloomington.

In 1981, she moved in with her son William's family in Lakewood. In 1988, they all retired to the Boruff family farm near Bloomington, where her husband was born.

Mrs. Boruff is survived by sons, William E. of Bloomington and John D. of Roachdale, Ind.; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A family memorial will be in Bloomington.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lakewood Christian Church or to the Lakewood High School Scholarship Fund.
