James Burney Worcester was one of twelve children born to Almond and Emeline (Steele) Worcester. On 19 December 1872, at the age of 27, James married 19 year old Ada Maria Garland in Newington, New Hampshire at the homestead of her third great grandfather, the Reverend Joseph Adams who was the first minister of that town.

Together the couple raised six children, three boys and three girls; John Almond, Ethel, Daniel, Helen Maria, Wayne James and Mabel.

James was a farmer, house builder, cabinet maker and constructed ice boxes.
