On 7 May 1861 Almond enlisted as Sergeant in Company F, 2nd Regiment, Vermont Infantry. Commissioned Second Lieutenant on 4 Aug 1862 and promoted to First Lieutenant on 13 Oct 1862. He was wounded on 12 May 1864 at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. He mustered out 29 June 1865.
After the War he lived in St. Louis, Missouri for some period of time. He worked as a mechanic and a police officer. Almond returned to Warren, Vermont by 1875 and on 5 April 1915 completed a military pension application.
Almond died 1 Feb 1931 in Chicago, Illinois, where he may have been living with his son.
