Mary Virginia "Jennie" (Herring) Shaffer was the daughter of Confederate Civil War veteran Henry Allen Herring (1829-1924) and his second wife Julania Ann Hall (1838-1882). "Jennie" Herring was born on her father's farm in Albemarle County, Virginia. Jennie and her brothers Hasting and Judson and her sisters Lucy and Lena came to western Pennsylvania seeking work. Hasting and Judson Herring married Somerset County girls and went back to Virgina. Jennie, Lucy, and Lena Herring married Somerset County men and settled in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Jennie Herring was working for Rev. Perry J. Blough and his wife Emma (Shaffer) Blough at their store in Hooversville, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, when she met Emma's brother Harvey Shaffer. Jennie Herring and Harvey Shaffer were married on Jennie's 22nd birthday, March 6, 1890 by Rev. Hiram Musselman in Scalp Level, Pa. Jennie's brother Judson Chester Herring married Rev. Perry J. Blough's sister Annie Blough. Harvey Shaffer was the son of Hiram Shaffer (1836-1892) and Frances Berkebile (1837-1915). Harvey was born Nov. 12, 1867 in Shade Township, Somerset County, Pa. and died March 27, 1933 at Memorial Hospital in Johnstown, Pa. Harvey Shaffer owned a 117 acre farm two miles east of Hooversville in Shade Township. He was a farmer and livestock dealer. Harvey and Jennie Shaffer were members of the Hooversville Church of the Brethren which was founded by Harvey's brother-in-law Rev. Perry J. Blough. Jennie had wavy red hair and blue eyes. She was also a marvelous cook especially of pies, and also made all the clothes for her family. Harvey and Jennie Shaffer were the parents of 14 children as follows: Luna May Shaffer (1891-1942), wife of Clyde Holsopple; Anna Pearl Shaffer (1892-1929), wife of Orlo Cloyd Manges; Elmer Earl Shaffer (1893-1954); Arthur Wellington Shaffer (1894-1965); Leonard Delmus Shaffer (1895-1932); Wilbert Chester Shaffer (1897-1971); Lloyd Allen Shaffer (1898-1975); Harvey Hasting Shaffer (1900-1987); Paul Calvin Shaffer (1901-1985); Fern Lena Shaffer (1903-1982), wife of Forrest V. Watkins; Hulda Ruth Shaffer (1904-1993), wife of (1)Arbanas Hartman, (2) Daniel Monroe, (3) Donald Latta; Alton Herring Shaffer (1906-1992); Mary Virginia Shaffer (1908-1992), wife of William Seese; and Gladys Marie Shaffer (1912-2001), wife of Burton Croyle. Harvey and Jennie Shaffer also had 97 grandchildren. Harvey Shaffer was diabetic. He cut his hand while he was butchering a cow and it developed into gangrene. Harvey died a day after being admitted to Memorial Hospital. Jennie Shaffer died of cancer of the liver only five minutes after she was admitted to Memorial Hospital. Harvey and Mary Virginia "Jennie" (Herring) Shaffer are buried in Berkey Cemetery as are 13 of their children. Their tombstone gives their names and Harvey and Jennie Shaffer.
