Julania Ann (Hall) Herring was the daughter of Hastin H. Hall (July 21, 1806-Feb. 23, 1884) and Lucy (Beck) Hall (May 18, 1802-May 6, 1889). Julania's paternal grandparents were Joseph Hall (Feb. 11, 1772-June 29, 1855) and Lydia (Scott) Hall (born circa 1780; died Sept. 4, 1848); and her maternal grandparents were Micajah Beck (born circa 1774; died after 1850) and Sarah (Carver) Beck (born circa 1775-died circa 1825). Julania Ann Hall married Henry Allen Herring (July 10, 1829-Jan. 15, 1924) on July 11, 1860 in Greene County, Virginia. Henry Allen and Julania Herring were residing in Stony Point, Albemarle County, Virginia when Henry enlisted on March 28, 1862 at Orange County CourtHouse. He served in the 19th Virginia Infantry, Company E, the "Piedmont Guards" under Captain Charles Peyton and Colonel Strange. He was detailed as a teamster from August, 1863 through the last roll in August, 1864. He fought at the battle of Gettysburg and surrendered with General Robert E. Lee at Appomatox CourtHouse on April 9, 1865. In 1870 the Herring family lived in Fredericksville parish near Charlottesville, and in 1880 they were residing in White Hall township, Albemarle County, Virginia. Henry Allen and Julania Ann (Hall) Herring were the parents of 8 children as follows: Hasting William Herring (May 10, 1861-Jan. 20, 1940); Lucy Ann Herring (Dec. 1, 1862-March 7, 1944), wife of Daniel D. Weaver; Judson Chester Herring (Aug. 13, 1866-Nov. 11, 1958); Mary Virginia "Jennie" Herring (March 6, 1868-Oct. 1, 1937), wife of Harvey Shaffer; Lydia Frances Herring (Nov. 10, 1869-Aug. 23, 1882); Lena Edward Herring (Dec. 1, 1875-Nov. 13, 1957), wife of Ira J. Manges; Sarah Ellen Herring (Dec. 12, 1877-Aug. 11, 1878); and Joseph Allen Herring (June 5, 1880-Oct. 7, 1985). Julania Ann (Hall) Herring died of pneumonia and six months later to the day, her 12 year old daughter Lydia died of diptheria. Julania's brother Joseph Hastin Hall (May 30, 1831-April 6, 1904) served in the 19th Virginia Infantry, Company E; her brother William Scott Hall (July 22, 1834-May 4, 1911) also served in the 19th Virginia Infantry, Company E; and Julania's brother-in-law, William G. Cason (1825-July 17, 1863) served in the 57th Virginia Infantry, Company H, and died of injuries sustained at the Battle of Gettysburg. Julania Ann (Hall) Herring is buried beside her daughter Lydia Frances Herring in the Hall/Herring Graveyard on the north side of Lake Saponi in Greene County, Virginia. The land on which this little cemetery is situated was once owned by Julania's father Hastin H. Hall, and is now owned by the Saponi Corporation-Bishop Estate. There are at least 15 graves in this cemetery.
