Lydia Frances "Liddy" Herring was the 5th of the 8 children of Civil War veteran Henry Allen Herring (July 10, 1829-Jan. 15, 1924)and his second wife Julania Ann (Hall) Herring (Oct. 18, 1838-Feb. 23, 1882). Lydia was apparently named for her maternal great-grandmother Lydia (Scott) Hall (born circa 1780; died Sept. 4, 1848). Lydia Herring's brothers and sisters were: Hasting William Herring, Lucy Ann (Herring) Weaver, Judson Chester Herring, Mary Virginia "Jennie" (Herring) Shaffer, Lena Edward (Herring) Manges, Sarah Ellen Herring, and Joseph Allen Herring. Lydia Frances Herring was also a half sister to William B. Herring, Nettie Gertrude (Herring) Wood, and Florence Kathleen (Herring) Foreman. Lydia's death is recorded in the Albemarle County, Virginia death records of 1882, page 3, line 80. Lydia Frances Herring died of diptheria six months to the day after her mother's death, and she is buried beside her mother in a little cemetery on land which was once owned by her maternal grandfather Hastin H. Hall, and is now owned by the Saponi Corporation-Bishop Estate. The cemetery is situated on the north side of Lake Saponi in Greene County, Virginia.
