William was born in Gonzales county during the short period that his parents were living there. Our family oral history says that his mother was so dissatisfied with living in TX, so far from all of her family and friends, that as soon as she could travel after William's birth, Richard & Nancy Copeland and baby William returned to Pike County, AL by wagon.
His grandfather, Roburtus Copeland, put rockers on a small hog trough and then as a baby William rocked in the back of their wagon for their 800 mile trip back to Pike County, AL. Unfortunately, the oral history didn't include how long it took them to return by wagon.
William grew to adulthood in Pike county, AL and that is where all of his younger siblings were born.
He married in Barbour County, AL to Eliza Janie Lewis, and all of their children were born in AL. Her father and his were friends. William was a farmer and a carpenter by trade.
In the Great Depression following the stock market crash, like so many others, it was difficult to make enough income to feed his family. Eventually they relocated to Polk County, Florida, where his daughter Wania Mae and her husband had already moved to work in the citrus industry, which was one of the few growing industries in that area of the country.
He died there some years later of a heart attack, after a very brief illness.
