She was born in Barbour County, AL, to parents whose early ancestors were from Scotland, Ireland, England, and Germany, with some Cherokee heritage added in the mid 1600s in Virginia and 1700s in North Carolina.
Most of her childhood years were spent in Pike and Coffee Counties. As an adult, in the economic troubles following the war, she traveled from Alabama with friends to Ann Arbor, looking for better employment opportunities. There she met and married Eugene Horning, and they lived in Ann Arbor for the remainder of their lives.
She died peacefully in her sleep at age 89, while visiting her sister in Fairhope, AL, on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay.
She and her husband had no children.
