Doris Elaine Gulick, 28, formerly of 143 North Marshall street, was one of 31 persons killed yesterday afternoon when a Capital airlines plane exploded in flight about 15 miles east of Baltimore. She was a hostess aboard the craft which was making the New York to Atlanta run.
Miss Gulick was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Robert Gulick, now of Blossom Hill, Lancaster. Her father is former manager of radio station WORK and is assistant general manager of the Steinman television and radio stations in central Pennsylvania and Delaware.
She was a 1948 graduate of William Penn Senior High school and of Linden Hall college, Lititz. She had been a hostess seven years — two with United airlnes and five with Capital.
Her brother, J. Robert Gulick, Jr., lives at 121 West Jackson street, and her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Albert Haugh, 118 West Jackson street. Besides her parents, they are her only immedaite survivors.
Her brother told a reporter last night that his sister six months ago had an opportunity to become a non-flying supervisor of stewardesses in Florida but had turned down the job.
"She loved to fly," said Gulick. He said, however, that on several occasions she had expressed dread of working the New York-to-Atlanta flight at this time of the year because of the April and May storms.
The big plane was flying through a thundersquall when it exploded, according to the Associated Press.
All 27 passengers and four crew members were killed. Among the dead was another hostess, Sue Ann Wessell. Both girls had addresses listed as Ypsilanti, Mich., where they had apartments while flying out of Detroit.
Doris also had attended Beaver college, Jenkinstown, before transferring to Linden college. She left York when she began training for airline hostess in Cheyenne, Wyo.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete.
