Ika Sulentic, daughter of Joso and Ana (Japuncic) Sulentic. Although Ika celebrated her birthday as June 30, 1890 but her Croatian birth record reflects June 24, 1889 as her date of birth.

Ika's father, Joso Sulentic (1860 - 1937), was the son of Petar and Tomica Sulentic. Ika's mother, Ana Japuncic (1864 - 1942), was the daughter of Jakov and Lucija Japuncic. Joso Sulentic and Ana Japuncic were married on November 7, 1886 at Sveti Rok, Croatia. Mile Krpan served as witness and Valentin Kmemcic (spelling?) performed the service. Joso and Ana were the parents of ten children.

During her childhood in Croatia Ika lived with her grandmother and immigrated to the United States in 1911. Departing Flume on June 10, 1911, Ika sailed on the Saxonia and arrived at Ellis Island on June 30, 1911.

Ika married Milan Sulentic a/k/a Mike Sulentic (1886 - 1941) at Albia, IA on July 22, 1911. Although Ika's sister Marija was married to Milan's brother Gaspar in Croatia, Ika had not met Milan until she traveled to Iowa to marry him.

Ika's brothers Tomo (1895 - 1958), Stipan (Steve) and Ivan (John) also emigrated from Croatia. Brothers Steve Sulentic (1891 - 1949) and Tomo Sulentic (1895 - 1958) settled in North Chicago, IL and brother John immigrated to Canada.

Ika and Milan were the parents of six children: Mary S. (Sulentic) White (1912 - 2002); Anthony "Tony" Sulentic (1913 - 1998); Katie (Sulentic) Paveglio (1914 - 2010); Anne (Sulentic) Scieszinski (1916 - 2007); Infant Daughter Sulentic (1918 - 1918) and Thomas "Tommy" Sulentic (1920 - 2003).

The wife of a coal miner, Ika was widowed at the age of fifty-one when her husband suffered a cerebral hemorrhage after being struck in the head while in the mine a few weeks before his death. Ika will be remembered for her long hair that she wore in braids wrapped around her head until she had her first haircut at the age of eighty-two; the delicious cinnamon rolls and fresh bread that she made early in the morning; and her needlework skills.

Ika passed away at the age of eighty-three at Monroe County Hospital, Albia, IA on September 15, 1973.
