Adam Bloedel was born in Oppenheim, Germany, the son of Heinrich Bloedel and Anna Maria Laubenstein. He and his five siblings came to the US aboard the Zurich in 1854. Adam married Johanna Strothenke in Milwaukee on 13 Jan 1866, and founded Bloedel's Jewelry in 1868. He maintained his interest in the store until his death.
