Howard S. Bangen, 83, died April 4, 1999 in a New Town nursing home. The funeral was held April 7, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bethel Lutheran Church in New Town with the burial held in the Grand Valley Cemetery rural New Town.
Howard S. Bangen was born Dec. 11, 1915 on his grandfather's farm near Climax, Minn., the son of H. Anton and Sara (Berg) Bangen. He moved with the family as an infant to a homestead 11 miles south of Sanish, N.D. Howard attended country school, one year of high school at Sanish and graduated from Plaza High Schol in 1934. He rode the train from Sanish to Plaza to attend high school. Howard farmed with his parents until he entered the U.S. Army at Fort Snelling on March 14, 1941 and was discharged from Camp McCoy, WI on Oct. 26, 1945.
Howard married Hildegarde Ritzke at Tacoma, Wash. on Dec. 24, 1942. They returned to Sanish after serving in the military where they farmed with Howard's brother, Arvid. Hildegard died Oct. 6, 1965. Howard married Rogene Pickar Evenson on Nov. 26, 1966 in New Town. They were now a family of 16. Howard and Rogene continued to live on the farm until 1978 when they built a new home in New Town. Howard moved to the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in New Town April 1996 and Rogene died May 20, 1996.
Howard was a member of Big Bend Township Board, Farmers Union Elevator Board, State Fair Board and Bethel Lutheran Church and was a 50-year member of the New Town American Legion. He enjoyed farming, liked to read, play cards, watch baseball and especially enjoyed his family.
Survivors: sons Dennis, Casper, Wyo., Richard, New Town, Ron Evenson, Aberdeen, SD, John Evenson, Lawton, Iowa; Robert, Minot; Kelly Evenson, New Town; Edwin, Missoula, Mont.; daughters Arliss Moe, Bismarck, Nell Monson, Parshall, Corrine Jensen, Franklin, Wisc., Sheila Deserly, New Town, Candace Overby, Spearfish, SD; sisters Harriet Larson, Brush Prairie, Wash., Ruth Richardson and Thelma Collins, Vancouver, Wash.; brothers Arivd, New Town, Reuben, San Jose, Calif.; 28 grandchildren; three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Leland, son Lance, daughter Dianne Murphy.
Pallbearers: His grandchildren and great grandchildren.
