Heart Attack Fatal to John Cotherman, 63; Rites Held Monday
Funeral services for John J. Cotherman, Sr., 63, Route 4, Monroe, native of Washington
township, who suffered a fatal heart attack while operating a tractor on the family farm
Thursday, were held at 1:30 p. m. Monday at the Stuessy funeral home, Monroe.
The Rev. J. Allan Mittler, pastor of the Zwingli United Church of Christ, Monticello,
officiated, and burial was in the Greenwood cemetery, Monroe. Pallbearers were Alfred Keller,
Karl H. Freitag and Laurance G. Marty, Monticello, Jacob Blumer, Fond du Lac, Henry Elmer,
Sr., and Merle J. Paffel, both of Route 4, Monroe.
Mr. Cotherman, who was pronounced dead upon arrival at St. Clare hospital, Monroe, was
born in Washington township Aug. 8, 1902, the son of Ernest E. and Rose Wittenwyler
Cotherman. He attended the Simmons school. On Dec. 20, 1923, he was united in marriage in
St. John's United Church of Christ, Monroe, to Margaret Ruch. He had always farmed after
his marriage.
He was a member of Zwingli United Church, Monticello, and was president of the
Wittenwyler-Burgy Cheese Co. at the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife; his mother, Mrs. Rose Cotherman, Monroe: two daughters, Mrs.
Harrison (Marian) Buttenhoff, Route 4, Monroe, and Mrs. Naaman (Frances) Bechtolt, Beloit;
a son, John R., at home; a brother, Thomas, Monticello: four sisters, Mrs. Alfred Aeberhard,
Sr., Monticello, Mrs. Edwin Theiler, Juda, Mrs. Edward Weiss, New Glarus, and Miss Rose
Cotherman, Madison, and three grandchildren. His father died in 1957.
