Mrs. Cotherman, 92, Area Native, Dies: Rites Held Saturday

Funeral services for Mrs. Ernest (Rose L.) Cotherman, 92 years of age, who passed away

Thursday, Sept. 23, in the St. Clare hospital, Monroe, after a brief illness, were held at 2

Saturday afternoon in the Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe.

The Rev. Charles G. Workman, pastor of the Zwingli United Church of Christ, Monticello,

officiated, and burial was in Highland cemetery, Monticello. Grandsons were pallbearers:

Alfred E. Aeberhard, Jr., Monticello, Harrison Butenhoff, John Cotherman, and Henry C.

Elmer, Monroe, Naamen Bechtolt, Beloit, Eugene Theiler, Milwaukee, and Thomas. T.

Theiler, Juda.

Rose Lydia Wittenwyler, a native of Washington township, was born Feb. 18, 1879, a

daughter of John U. and Anna Voegeli Wittenwyler. On Sept. 20, 1900, she was united in

marriage to Ernest Cotherman. They farmed for 45 years between Monticello and Monroe on

Highway 69, before retiring to Monroe. The farm is now owned by Glen Flannery.

Mrs. Cotherman took a keen interest in daily events and was unusually alert and

considerate of her family and her many friends and acquaintances for one of her advanced

years up until her final illness.

Mrs. Cotherman is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Edwin (Florence) Theiler, Juda, Mrs.

Alfred (Leora) Aeberhard, Monticello, Mrs. Edward (Myrtle) Wyss, New Glarus, and Miss

Rose M. Cotherman, a teacher in the Shorewood school, Madison; three brothers, John, Matt,

and Walter Wittenwyler, and a sister, Mrs. Bertha Keller, all of Monticello; 10 grandchildren,

and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Feb. 25, 1957; two sons, John in 1965, and

Thomas, 1966; a sister, Mrs. Hulda Hancock, in 1964, and two grandsons, Richard Theiler, in

1968, and Carlyle Cotherman, 1930,
