Rites Held Here for Ernest E. Cotherman

Funeral services for Ernest E. Cotherman, 82 years of age, Monroe, who passed away at

6:05 a. m. Monday in the St. Clare hospital after an illness of six weeks, were held at 2

Wednesday afternoon at the Voegeli funeral home here.

The Rev. Paul J. Gibson, pastor of the Evangelical United Brethren church, Monroe,

officiated, and burial was in Highland cemetery here. Pallbearers were Alfred E. Aeberhard,

Monticello, Harrison Butenhoff, John R. Cotherman, Henry C. Elmer, Jr., Richard Theiler,

Monroe, and Eugene Theiler, Juda.

Monroe Township Native

A native of Monroe township, Mr. Cotherman was born Nov. 28, 1874, the son of Thomas

and Susan Ball Cotherman, a pioneer farm family in this area. He attended Hillside rural

school. On June 20, 1900, he was united in marriage to Rose Wittenwyler. They farmed in

Washington township, a few miles south of Monticello, until 1945, when they retired to

Monroe.

Mr. Cotherman is survived by his wife; two sons, Thomas, Monticello, and John, Route 4

Monroe; four daughters, Mrs. Edwin Theiler, Juda, Mrs. Alfred Aeberhard, Monticello, Mrs.

Edward Weiss, New Glarus, and Miss Rose Cotherman, Madison; two sisters Mrs. John Geigel

and Mrs. Frank Pierce, Monroe; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was

preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters, and one grandson, Carlyle Cotherman, in

1930.
