"DIED AS THE BELL TOLLED. Elizabeth, wife of Jacob Rentzheimer, died on Monday evening at her home, near Hellertown, at the advanced age of 74 years, 4 months and 22 days. The deceased had been ill for quite a long time. A week ago she suffered a stroke of paralysis, which ended in her death. Her bereaved husband and an only daughter, Mrs. T. O. Bachman, of Lower Saucon township survive. Mrs. Rentzheimer was a very charitable old lady and was the possessor of several other admirable qualities that were often spoke of by her many friends. A peculiar narrative hovers about the late illness and death of the dear old lady. Mrs. Rentzheimer and her husband were the purchasers and donors of the bell for Christ Union Church. On last Wednesday afternoon when the bell was placed in position, it was tolled, by the request of Mr. Rentzheimer, so as to judge its tone. At the Rentzheimer home, away out of town, the sound of the bell was distinctly heard by Mrs. Rentzheimer who laid ill in bed. She was pleased beyond measure on account of the bell's sweet sound and spoke of it to her husband. The next morning, she became a paralytic. On account of her death, the bell was tolled for the first time yesterday morning. * The funeral will be held on next Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. Short services will be held at the house and the regular services will be held in the new Christ Union Church. Burial will be made in the Hellertown Cemetery."
From the death records at the Northampton County Courthouse, Easton, Pa.:
"Elizabeth Rentzheimer, age 74 years, 4 months; married. Born in Lower Saucon; died February 8, 1897 of Apoplexy of 18 weeks duration. Buried in Hellertown Cemetery February 13, 1897."
