After high school in Goderich, Ontario, Walter took a job with a construction gang on the Railway's transcontinental lines. In 1907, Walter entered University of Toronto where he studied for 7 years and worked in the summer months on railway construction in Western Canada. In 1914 Walter graduated as a engineer. Early in World War I he went overseas with the Canadian Railway Troops serving in France and Belguim being commissioned in the field. In years 1919-1922 Walter worked for the C.P.R. at construction and maintenance work. In April 1922 he began 31 years of service with the Ontario Department of Highways.
On 17 May 1916 Walter married Angie Gilson. She died October 1921. On 29 August 1925 Walter married Jean Louise Reynolds at the Anglican Church in St Marys, Ontario.
In 1953 because of poor health Walter resigned his job. Later he worked for short periods as Resident Engineer for City of Ottowa and with the Ottowa Suburban Roads Commission.
Walter died 4 March 1961 at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, BC while on a visit to his daughter.
Walter & Jean Louise had two children, Mary Elizabeth born 29 March, 1928 and Robert Alexander born 20 April 1929 in Stratford, Ontario
