Alex moved with his parents from Cainsville, Ontario to Goderich, Ontario in 1857. After school years at an early age he worked as a clerk in a hardware store. Later he joined his father (James Saunders 1822-1892) in a heating and plumbing business until 1891. The 1881 census shows Alex and his father as tinsmiths.
On 15 February 1882 Alex married Geraldine Cressman in Goderich.
In 1891 Alex went to work for the Goderich Organ Company. In 1892 the Goderich Organ Companmy which had been established a few years earlier were looking for a new manager - the choice fell on Alex and he soon had full control of the business and at the time of his death was several times larger than in 1892. To the manufacture of organs, he added bathroom woodwork and fittings which became the largest business of this kind in Canada. His business took him all over Canada and three or four trips to Europe. In the early 1900's, sons W. Frank and Charles K. joined him in the firm where Alex was president up to his death.
Alex & Geraldine lived on Nelson Street and they called their home "Blairgowrie" the name of the birthplace of Alex's father.
