Letter from Jane Vance Keller to her sister Peggy
Blount County [TN] October 5th 1817
"Dear Sister with pleasure I inform you we are all well and hope these few lines may
find you all enjoying the same state of health. I received a letter from Sister
Harriet in September in that she inform me of Betsys mifsfortune(misfortune) I was
in great hopes when I was there she would have a liveing Child for she-----appeared
tolerable stout. she also wrote you and little James had the measels but had got
over them. she wrote that she was affeared that she was taking them herself I was
delivered of a son the 3 of December. I suppose you heard it before this time. for
Cousin William Lusk was here when it was eight days old.

I told him to tell Father. I don't know whether you saw him or not. we have no name
for our little son yet. I reckon again the next time I write we will have a name for
him. I am not able to write to you whether we will move away yet or not. Keller is a
going to start on Wednesday to ashville in Buncomb [Co]. there is a gentleman has a
tan yard he wants to rent it out and he is a going to see him and I suppose if the
(they) agree we will move there. if we go I shall write to you. I want to go some
place from this. I have been very tireed(tired) living here. Harriet wrote that
Amanda Craig was married I reckon satisfied(?). Harriet will still remain with her
Father. Polly Montgomery was in Maryville I did not see her. she sent me word she
was comeing to see me.

but she did not come. I would have been glad to of seen her. Cousin Jane Lawery told
me she had been sick almost ever sience(since) she left home. I have nothing new to
write to you. the is (there is) no marriages no nothing about here. Issabella Lawery
has never come yet. I don't know whether she will make out to get a husband or not
before she comes back. Billy Lusk said he left her at his house when he left home.
our Children has been going to school ever since I came home until last Friday. they
learnt very well Peggy writes a (Margaret 'Peggy'Keller] right pretty hand and reads
and spells very well. Christian is lazay(lazy) he did not learn as well as her and
has had a heep (heap) most (more) schooling. he cried a most(almost) all day sunday
for me to write a letter for him to send to his uncle Dacy. give my respects to the
old laday(lady) and all the family, and Fathers family, and believe me to your well
wishing.

The state where this letter originated is not given, however, modern maps show a
Blount county in eastern TN. Also, a reference is made to the town of Maryville
which is in Blount Co. TN.
It is mentioned that Keller was going to Ashville in Buncomb Co. to see a man about
a tan yard. No state is given. On modern maps there is the town of Asheville in far
western NC located in Buncombe Co.
