John was born in Morristown, NJ in 1854 to Daniel Sweeney & Mary Barrow (both Irish immigrants from County Cork who arrived in the US during the time of the Great Famine). Daniel and Mary either arrived married or met and married in New York. Their oldest son, Eugene, was born in New York in 1852. The family settled in Morristown by 1854 and after John had 3 other children there: Hannah (McGowan) (1856); Julia (Reannie) (1858); and Margaret (1860). The family established a horse farm in Morristown by 1870. Mary died in May of 1876. Daniel remarried Mary Coleman in January of 1877 and had 4 more children: Catherine (King) (1877); Daniel (1879); William (1880); and Rose (Kelly) (1882). Father Daniel died in 1883. Eugene either took over farm by 1880 or established his own farm by that time. Farm was in Morristown near Atno/Early/Speedwell.

John married Margaret Coveney in about 1876. They had 2 sons, Daniel (1877) & John Raymond (1879) in Morristown. They relocated to Newark in about 1881. 6 more children followed: Lydia (1881), Lillian (Allison)(1886), Emil Joseph (1887), Emily (Howard)(1889), Ruth (1892), and Marguerite (Siegel/Crane) (1895). John worked as a horse driver/teamster for many years. He seemed to have run a driving business between Newark & Morristown with brother Eugene.

When John died in Newark in 1925, Margaret and most of his children relocated to the Jersey shore.
