Eugene J. Sweeney was the first child of Daniel Sweeney and Mary Barrow - both Irish immigrants escaping the Great Famine. Eugene was born in Dec of 1852 in New York State, probably NYC. The family relocated to Morristown, NJ by 1855, where brother John and then sisters Hannah, Julia, and Margaret were born. Father Daniel started up a horse farm in Morristown. Eugene either bought his own land or inherited part of the farm, which he was working by 1880. His mother Mary died in May of 1876, and father, Daniel, remarried Mary Coleman in January of 1877. They had 4 children: Catherine, Daniel, William, and Rose. His father Daniel died in 1883.

Eugene married Maria Murphy in 1878 and they had 8 children: Agnes (1878-1879); Marie (Mae) (1879); Eugene Vincent (1882); Emily (1884-1885); Agnes (1885); Emma (1890); Joseph (1893); and Edward (1895). It looks like Eugene ran some kind of driving (horse) business with his brother John between Newark & Morristown. Eugene appears in Newark directory at John's address listed as driver, but also in Morristown as bookkeeper. Eugene had a house built at 8 Atno in Morristown in 1881, and lived there until he died in 1917.
