Daniel Sweeney was born in County Cork (possibly near Mallow) in about 1831 to Eugene (Owen) Sweeney and Mary Callahan (Callaghan). He left Ireland and arrived in New York during the time of the Great Famine). He may have already been married to Mary B (Barrow) when he arrived; otherwise he met and married her in New York. In any case, their oldest son, Eugene J., was born in New York in Dec of 1852.

The family relocated to Morristown, New Jersey where Daniel bought property and developed a horse farm. Children John J.(1854), Hannah M.(McGowan)(1856), Julia F.(Reannie)(1858), and Margaret A.(1860) were born in Morristown. Mary B. died in May, 1876.

Daniel then married Mary C (Coleman)in Jan, 1877. They had 4 children: Catherine M.(King)(1877), Daniel J.(1879), William F.(1880), and Rose T.(Kelly)(1882).

Probably because he was sick, (he died of cancer) Daniel sold his share of the farm in late 1882 (part of the farm may have belonged to son Eugene). Farm was in Morristown near Speedwell, Early, top of Atno.
