Mrs. Martha Johnson Peterson was born in Norrbo Ugglebo-Parish, Gefleborgs Lan, Sweden, April 13, 1857 and departed to her heavenly home from the Hospital in Sutton, July 6, 1929, at the age of 72 years, 2 months and 23 days.
She came with her parents to America in 1868, settling in Vatga, Illinois for 12 years and later coming to Clay County, Nebraska in 1880, where she has lived for 49 years.
She was married to Mr. John P. Peterson in Vatga, Illinois, in 1875, and to this union was born twelve children. Mr. Peterson died November 23, 1917.
Mrs. Peterson leaves to mourn her departure, nine daughters and three sons: Mrs. Ida Aspegren, Mrs. Nellie Nelson, and Mrs. Hilma Aspegren of Saronville, Mrs. Hannah England of Harvard; Mr Wendell Peterson of Saronville, Mrs. Lillie Johnson and Mr. Eddie Peterson of Harvard; Mrs. Irene Rodelius of Evanston, Illinois; Mr Roy Peterson of Saronville; Mrs. Esther Forslund of Evanston, Illinois; Mrs Nettie Swartz of Lushton, Nebr.; and Mrs. Ethel Israelson of Saronville; 32 grandchildren, and 3 great grand children; one sister Mrs. Kate Anderson of Sutton, other relatives, and an exceedingly large number of friends.
At the age of fifteen, Mrs. Peterson became converted and joined the Methodist church and for fifty-seven years she has been a member of said church.
As a mother, Mrs. Peterson was gentle, patient, and unselfish. She was ready to do everything that she could for the good of her children. As a neighbor she never interfered with other people's business and yet she was always ready to help. As a member of the community she was highly esteemed by all because of her good judgment, her modesty, and her kindness. Mother Peterson was truly a Christian character; her very presence radiated mental and spiritual sunshine. She had a masterful self control, remaining calm in all conditions. Her cheerfulness was inspiring to those who came near her. Mrs. Peterson's life ought to continue to live in this community as an example of real Christian character.
The funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon at the Saronville Methodist Church conducted by the Pastor Rev. Johnston and the remains were laid to rest in the Saronville Methodist Cemetery.
