Dayne Hopping, age 93, of Knoxville, Illinois died at 3:25 A.M. on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville, Illinois.
He was born on April 14, 1918 in rural Ipava, Illinois the son of Oliver D. and Edna E. Brewer Hopping. He was raised and educated in the rural Ipava, Havana, and Galesburg, Illinois area. He married Mildred E. Tinkham on March 12, 1940 in Galesburg, Illinois. They just celebrated 73 years of marriage.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Dayna (Ronald) Zimmerman of Appleton, Illinois and Denise (Rob) Dornink of Galesburg, Illinois; one son: Jackie L. Hopping of Galesburg, Illinois. Seven grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Raymond; two sisters, Ada and Freida; and one step-son: Ronald (Dorathy) Tinkham of Abingdon, Illinois.
He was a proud veteran of World War II from April of 1944 to February of 1946, serving under General Mark Clark and the 88th infantry division "Blue Devils", 313th combat engineers as a truck driver, hauling mines and construction materials in the PO Valley and North Apennines, Italy. He was awarded the EAME Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars and the Victory Medal.
He owned and operated his own dump trucks from his time in the service until his retirement in 1983, working construction in the area and the winter months in the New Orleans, Louisiana area. He was a member of the Teamsters Union 15, 29, and 455.
He loved old cars, trucks, and end loaders and really enjoyed scraping metal. He also enjoyed traveling the country, to find warm weather, seafood, and a ghost town.
Memorial graveside services will be held on Monday, March 19, 2012 at 1:30 P.M. at the Knoxville Cemetery, Knoxville, Illinois, with Military rites conducted by the American Legion. There will be no visitation. In-Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Harry Philblad American Legion Post #749 of Knoxville, Illinois or the Guardian Angels.
