Following are excerpts from her obituary.:

Syracuse (NY) Hearld-American, Sun. 28 Dec 1958. Mrs Elizabeth Torrey, 97, died in the home of her son Edmund E. Torrey, McGraw, Sat 27 Dec 1958. She was the head of the nursery at the King's Daughters Childrens Home, Cortland, for more than 30 years. Born in Ireland, she came to America alone in her late teens. Her four sisters and parents came later. She came here to work in a home in Texas Valley (NY). In 1879 she married Delos Torrey in Freetown (NY). Following his death in 1888 (actually 3 Oct 1886), she was employed at the A.P. Corset Co., until 1898. Following 14 years as a housekeeper for the late Col. Daniel Lamont, she joined the staff at the childrens home.

In addition to her son, she is survived by two grandsons Max Torrey, McGraw, NY, and Paul Torrey, Largo, FL; and granddaughter, Mrs Henry (Dorothy) Ryan, Ravena, Ohio.

Internment in the McGraw Rural Cemetery.

Additional Note: Her husband, Delos Torrey (1858-1886), died following an injury from "falling on a sled." Cause of death peritonitis.

95TH Birthday. Source: Syracuse Herald-American, Thursday 9 February 1956. This account of her biography is much the same as that related in her obituary. Some of the new details will be listed here. She was born 11 Feb 1861 in County Kerry, Ireland. Her given name was Anna Hulgard Walsh, which is surprising in that all of her records in America are for a given name Elizabeth. Her parents and four sisters came to America after Elizabeth and her mother lived to be 98 years of age.

She came to America at age 17 and was employed at the Seeber home in Texas Valey (Cortland Cty, New York)—that would have made it 1878 and she married Delos Terry just a year later,1879, in Freetown (Cortland Cty, New York). Following her husband's early death, she became employed in the home of Col. Daniel Lamont in McGraw, after which she eventually became the head of the Children's Home in Cortland. She was employed there for more than 30 years.
