William Tennyson Popplewell Sr., 79, of Kansas City died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City. Memorial services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, at Iberia First Christian Church. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association.
Mr. Popplewell was born July 29, 1919, in Brumley to James Isaac and Molly Meredith Popplewell. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, the former Claire Marie Anderson of Brumley in 1996.
Mr. Popplewell served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was in sales with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and later retired from construction as a superintendent. After retirement, he owned and operated Tennclair Co. in Rocky Mount for 12 years.
Surviving are three sons, Steve Popplewell of Jefferson City, Don Popplewell of Boulder, Colo., and J. R. Popplewell Jr. of Mission Hills, Kan.; six grandchildren; his step-mother-in-law, Zella Thomas Thornsberry Anderson of Kansas City; step-sister-in-laws Peggy Thornsberry Phillips of Kansas City and Lucille Thornsberry Crane of Kaiser; and sister-in-laws and brother-in-law, Virginia Popplewell of Kansas City and Shirley (Anderson) and Gail Whittle of Brumley. He was preceded in death by sisters Eula Steen and Lola Ambrose of Iberia and brothers Curt Popplewell, Gail Popplewell and Reagan Popplewell, all of Kansas City.
