Adam enlisted on 20 Feb 1862 with Company K, 20th Indiana Infantry and was discharged on 01 Mar 1864. He was wounded during the War and was captured by the Confederacy at one point. After the War Adam spent some time in California (Santa Cruz County) before returning to Illinois and marrying the widow, Mrs. Patsy Reed Hollingsworth (c1850-???) on 05 Nov 1875 at Paris, Edgar County, Illinois. Patsy had first been married to Joseph A. Hollingsworth on 06 Mar 1870 at Edgar County, Illinois and had one known child, a child with Joseph, Clara F. Hollingsworth, born c1871.
Adam and Patsy were the parents of five known children, namely:
1. infant daughter BAUM (???-1879)
2. Georgia Anna Baum Currie (1879-1935)
3. Nettie Dell Baum Smith (1877-1957)
4. Chester Arthur Baum (18881-1963)
5. Sadie M. Baum (1884-c1885)
In 1880 Adam (a farmer), Patsy, step-daughter Clara, Georgia and Nettie were living at clinton Township, Vermillion County, Indiana. After that they moved to Nebraska, where they lived at Dawes County. Adam and Patsy divorced on 20 Nov 1889 at Dawes County, Nebraska.
After that Adam spent the remainder of his life in various Soldier's rest homes, dying in one in Virginia.
