Dr. Z.T. Baum, 79 years old, veteran of the Civil war, possible the youngest volunteer to serve in that war, several times mayor of Paris and prominent in its civic and political life, passed away at his home in Paris, Illinois on Tuesday afternoon, December 21, at 3 o'clock.
Dr. Baum had been in ill health for two or three years and had been exceedingly feeble most of the fall. His comrades of Driskell Post GAR had paid special attention to him and on recent occasions had held meeting in his front porch to give him a chance to be present., He was a member of the famous "Persimmon Brigrade" enlisted from Indiana and up to last year had always been a participant in their reunions. Dr. Baum was a staunch Republican, a campaigner of more than ordinary ability and had been successful when appealing to the voters. His last public office was city commissioner which he held up to the change of administration nearly four years ago.
He was born in White county, IN, Dec, 15, 1847. In 1859 his parents moved to Carroll Co. There he received his early education. He enlisted in the last war of the rebellion at the age of 16 and served eighteen months. He then returned to Carroll County and began to study medicine with Dr. JL Morrow of Pittsburg. In the winter of 1868 he attended the Rush Medical College of Chicago, and the following spring attended the Miami Medical College of Cincinnati from which he was graduated in the winter term of 1870. He began the practice of his profession in Transitville, IN, removed to Paris in 1873 where he has since remained. He had been U.S. examining surgeon of Edgar County, city councilman, mayor and city commissioner, He was the youngest of a family of ten children, three brothers of whom were soldiers.
On December 12, 1878, he married Eliza E McCord, who survives him with one son, Ralph A Baum. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Martha McCarty of Paris, Ill and four grand children. He was a cousin of the late John L and George W Baum of Carroll County, IN., Dr. Baum fraternally was affiliated with the Masons. He was adjutant of Driskell Post, GAR at the time of his death.
