Squire Thomas Carpenter was born January 18, 1887 in Madison County, Arkansas, to John Bruton Carpenter and Samantha Ellen Short. He married Maude Louise Burk on Feb 17, 1907 in Madison County, Arkansas (his brother Dave married his sister-in-law). They had five children: Gertrude Edna "Trudy" Whitmire, Ora Dorothea Whitmire (the sisters married brothers), Alvin James, Elmer Burl "Tuffy", and Ernest John. Tommy worked with his father as a blacksmith in his youth and honed his skills as a carpenter later on. He died at the age of 83 in California where he raised his family.
