Obituary, Stevens Point Gazett, Stevens Point, Wi, March 27, 1912, page 1
Heart was Ruptured
Jas. R. Luce Pioneer Stevens Pointer, Passed Away Very Suddenly At Home At Everett, WA.
James R. Luce, for many years a resident of Stevens Point, died at Everett, Wash., on 5th inst., his death coming very unexpectedly. He was engaged in moving his household goods and was found in a dying condition in a shed at the rear of his residence. A conveyance was immediately called and started for the hospital but Mr. Luce passed away before reaching that institution, his death being pronounced due to a rupture of the heart.
The deceased was born in New York, Apr. 5, 1828, and was therefore nearly 84 years of age. He was married at Madison, Wis., Aug. 15, 1852 to Esther M. Pooler, who survives him and nine children were born to them, six of whom are living, together with 11 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. The children are Arthur J. Luce of Amherst, Mrs. G.W. Holt of Madison, Herbert A. Luce of Marysville, Wash., Mrs. J. C. Frost of Madison, Louis L. Luce of Hoquiam, Wash. The deceased served during the civil war as a member of the Third Wisconsin Cavalry. He was one of the first settlers of Stevens Point, building a blacksmith shop just north of the Slough on N. Second street, when that section was covered with brush and pine trees. Later he opened a machine shop and for many years was engaged in gumming and setting rotary saws for the lumber manufacturers in this locality. He also patented an adjustable saw tooth and invented other improvements in the saw line. For the sale of some of these inventions Mr. Luce was offered but refused what was considered a fortune, being impressed with the opionion that they would prove more valuable in time. One of his inventions is said to be manufactured at present by a firm in Seattle.
Besides these above mentioned, Mr. Luce is survived by two brothers, B.F. Luce of Edmonds, Wash., and N.D. Luce of Everett, Wash. Mr. Luce was married four times the last about a year ago. He visited Stevens Point, spending several weeks here and with his daughters at Madison, during the home coming in August, 1908, and at that time was in the best of health and as active as anyone among the vast number who joined in the good time.
