Julian Earle Harris (who was called Earle) was the next to the youngest of nine children and the middle of three boys born to Samuel Rogers and Rosalie Hicks Harris. The family always called him Earle. During WWI, he was in the Army as a first Sergeant. After the war, he received an American Field Service Fellowship to France for two years in 1922-1924. He was awarded the French Legion of Honor as a chevalier in 1949 and he spent the year 1950 on sabbatical in Paris where he lived on the top floor of an apartment building. He received another award from the French government as an officer in 1958 for is interest and work in things French. He was a Professor of French at the University of Wisconsin and wrote a basic textbook of French which is still in use.
