Ida C. Steward passed away at the
home of her daughter, Mrs. August
Schmidt January 22, 1940, at the age
of 69 years, 10 months, 25 days. She
was stricken Monday, January 8th
with what was apparently a stroke.
She had often expressed the hope
that she would never be called upon
to suffer a long or painful illness.
This hope was fully realized as her
illness was of only two weeks duration
and whenever asked if she were
in pain the reply was always a negative
shake of her head. When the
end came, it was a calm, peaceful
going to sleep.
As Ida C. Stringer, she was born
February 28, 1870 on a farm upon
which part of the city of Elgin, IL
stands. Her parents were
James Justice and Harriet (Joy)
Stringer who came to Iowa when Ida
was about 2 years of age and located
on a farm about 3 1/2 miles west of
Strawberry Point.
She grew to womanhood in that
community and on October 30, 1887,
was united in marriage to George
0. Steward. They engaged in farming
in the community in which they
were raised for 34 years, when they
retired from active farm work and
made their home with their daughter,
Mrs. August Schmidt of near Arlington.
Ida was a woman who really enjoyed
doing things. She was never
too tired or too busy to help her family,
a neighbor, or a friend. She
was a great lover of flowers and
spent many happy hours in her garden
which was always a riot of color
during the entire summer. During
her brief illness, she was always
cheerful and often saw the funny
side over which she would smile or
laugh. She has left a place that can
never be filled.
She leaves to mourn her passing,
her husband, George Steward of
Arlington, three children, Nellie F.
Stamp of Manchester, Howard V.
of Strawberry Point, and Mrs. Helen
Schmidt of Arlington, and five grandchildren,
Vernon Schmidt, Lawrence
Steward, Mrs. Lavon Linderwell,
Merle Stamp and Mrs. Helen Huntley.
She was one of 12 children. Surviving
her are: John A. and Mrs.
Gertrude Reid of Houston, Texas;
Howard C. and Mrs. J. L. Alderson
of Weiser, Idaho; and Percy E. of
Elgin, IL. Two brothers, Clarence
R. and Le Roy W. and four sisters,
Mabel L., Bernice A., Blanche B., and
Edna P. preceded her in death.
The services were conducted at the
home of her daughter, Mrs. A. C.
Schmidt by Rev. Thomas Shaffer,
pastor of the M. E. church at Manchester
on Wednesday afternoon,
January 24th. The body will be
placed in the vault in the Strawberry
Point cemetery.
