Bessie was born in 1884 to Robert Freeman and Ella (Gunsallus) Curns. Her father fought in the Civil War from 1861 to 1864. Her mother died in 1894 and her father became sick so Bessie and her brother George were placed in the Soldiers' Orphans School in Fayette, Pennsylvania. She graduated from the school when she was 16 and lived with her half-sister Annie Shaffer in Lock Haven from 1900 to 1908. In 1907 she started working for a neighbor, a widower with three children. She married Leon C. Andrews on 21 Mar 1908. Leon and Bessie had three children.
