Mary Estelle Elizabeth Cutts served as Dolley Madison's companion in Washington D.C. after the death of James Madison. In 1850 Mary E.E. Cutts wrote of Dolley Madison's enthusiasm for the Louisiana expedition in the first book length biography of the first lady.
