Lieutenant Thomas Cutts

Lieut. Thomas Cutts, age 31 years, died on duty at Fort Jesup, Louisiana, September 2, 1838.
Thomas Cutts was a beloved son to Richard Cutts and Anna (Anne) Payne, married March 31, 1804. Anna Payne was a younger sister to Dolley Payne who married James Madison, 5th President of the United States from 1809 - 1817. Richard Cutts, a son of Colonel Thomas Cutts and Elizabeth Scammon, graduated Harvard University 1890. Richard Cutts served as a member of Congress from Maine, then constituting a part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, serving from 1801 to 1813. Richard Cutts was Comptroller of the U. S. Treasury from 1817 to 1829.
Richard and Anne Cutts named son Thomas Cutts in honor of his paternal grandfather; he was their second born of seven children, Washington, D. C. Thomas Cutts graduated from West Point Class of 1828.
