Elma Vance Gilchrist, beloved mother and servant to her community, family and God, died on March 1, 1994 in Salt Lake City, Utah at the age of 87.

She was born August 3, 1906 in Provo, Utah to Hyrum Sanford and Serena Broadbent Vance. After graduating from BYU in 1930 she married Bruce Gilchrist in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on June 6, 1930; later divorced.

Elma was an active member of the LDS Church and served faithfully in the Mutual Improvement Association as well as the Relief Society. She was talented in music and sang for several years with the Granite Stake Singing Mothers. She was a member of the International Singing Mother's Chorus that toured the British Isles and performed when President David O. McKay dedicated the Hyde Park Chapel in London, England, on February 26, 1961. She worked as an elementary teacher in the Granite School District for 17 years, retiring on May 20, 1972. She served as a missionary for her church to the Los Angeles, California Mission from October 1975 to April 1977.

She is survived by children: Donald B. (Dixie) Gilchrist and Stephen V. (Bonnie) Gilchrist of Salt Lake City, Utah; Jay Roger (Julia) Gilchrist, Clayton, California; and Richard Kent (Suzette) Gilchrist, Bloomington, Indiana; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters: Lois McDonald and Norma V. Trunnell, of Provo, Utah; Miriam V. Peterson, Clayton, California; and Laura Dexter, Murray, Utah.

She was preceded in death by her four brothers: Cyril, Wendell, Merlin and Lloyd Vance.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 5, 1994 at 11 a.m. in the Lincoln Ward Chapel, 2005 South 900 East. Friends may call at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30-10:45 a.m. at the chapel prior to services. Interment, Provo City Cemetery, 610 South State Street, Provo, Utah.
