Oscar (he went by Merlin) is a son of Hyrum Sanford Vance and Serena Broadbent. The family lived in Idaho during his boyhood moving to Provo about the time he became a teenager. Merlin attended Brigham Young Academy. He married Jean Sperry on September 1, 1936 in Salt Lake, Utah.
Merlin worked for Mountain States Telephone & Telegraph Co working out-of-town for weeks and months at a time. He sold advertising for the Yellow Page Directory. He was good at carpentry and made improvements to the family home. He and Jean both played the piano. Having music in their home was important to them.
Merlin and Jean divorced in 1959. He married Donna Cottle Gosar on April 16, 1960 in Salt Lake, Utah. They moved to Arizona with Merlin still working for the phone company. He and Donna divorced in 1963.
Merlin struggled with depression and alcoholism. He moved back to Salt Lake for treatment in 1964. In 1965 he returned to work for the telephone company in Salt Lake. Merlin married Sarah (Sally) Clayton Watts on December 11, 1965 in Salt Lake. At age 59 Merlin retired from the telephone company. He became a realtor. Merlin and Sally divorced in May 1974 and then remarried that December.
