Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Sunday, January 17, 1971, Page 21 - Reception Slated For Dovie Gunn - Mrs. Dovie Mae Gunn, who will be 100 years of age Thursday, will be honored with a reception from 2-4 p.m. Saturday in the Dickens County Electric Willie Room. -- Friends and family of Mrs. Gunn will host the reception. -- Mrs. Gunn was born Jan. 21, 1871, in Lafayette County, Miss., where she lived until she was 18 years old. -- Mrs. Gunn attended Mississippi State College for Women one year and taught school two years in Mississippi. In 1892 she came to Texas to teach. -- In 1884 (should be 1894) she was married to the late Jim Leeton. He died in 1886 (should be 1896). Their daughter, Mrs. C. A. Crawford, died in 1957. -- Mrs. Gunn then taught school in Texas for eight years and attended summer school at Whiteboro College, Baylor University and Texas State College For Women, now Texas Women's University. In 1902 she was married to Charles Gunn. They had five children. The family moved from Bell County in 1908 to Hall County and from there to Dickens County in 1912. She now resides in Spur, where she moved in 1948. Mrs. Gunn has two daughters and one son, Mrs. T. B. Watson, Mrs. R. T. Crawford and Lloyd M. Gunn of Usk, Wash. -- Mrs. Gunn also has 10 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

James Franklin & Dovie Mae Gunn's parents were James Robert Gunn 1834-1928 and Mary Elvira (some say Elizabeth) Mills 1839-1914.

Sadly, Dovie's first husband, James R. Leeton, died before their little girl was born.

Dovie then married Charles Robert Gunn who was her cousin. Charles' dad was Lycurgus "Crug" Aurrilious Gunn. James Robert and "Crug" Gunn's dad was James Haines Gunn.

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Sunday, October 17, 1971, Section 8-A, Page 5, Column 1 - Rites Scheduled For Mrs. Gunn - SPUR (Special) - Mrs. Dovie Mae Gunn, 100, a Dawson County resident 59 years, died about 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Methodist Hospital after she suffered a broken hip Friday. -- Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Spur Church of Christ with Gary Williams, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Spur Cemetery under direction of Campbell Funeral Home. -- Mrs. Gunn was born in Oxford, Miss., and moved with her husband, the late Charles Gunn, to Dawson County in 1912. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. T. B. Watson and Mrs. Robert Crawford, both of Spur; a son, Lloyd Gunn of Washington, D. C.; 10 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
