Son of Nathan and Eliza Ann Baker Evans. William married (1) Margaret Fladger Haselden on January 8, 1867, and (2) Mary Sue Berry on December 16, 1873.

"William volunteered during the beginning of the Civil War. In one of the Virginia battles he received a wound which proved almost fatal; a minnie ball passing through his lung; but he recovered and returned to the front, where he served heroically till the end of the war. He surrendered with General Joseph Johnston's Army, April 26, 1885. His first wife Margaret Haselden died within a year of their marriage [incorrect, it was four years]. There were no children born of this marriage [incorrect, they had a son who died at the age of four months]. He married a second time to Mary Sue Berry. Capt. Evans has reared a large and interesting family, and resides now with most of his children on his plantation at Dillon." - History of Nathaniel Evans of Catfish Creek
