Obituary:
'ANOTHER OLD SETTLER GONE' A telegram was received here on Saturday last announcing the death of William Alvey, in Washington, D.C., after an illness of from two to three weeks duration. Deceased was born in Nottingham, England. He was 64 years of age. Came to Minnesota in 1858 (this was actually in 1856), settling in Faribault county. When the rebellion broke out he enlisted in Co. H., 3rd Minnesota Infantry, serving over three years. He made a splendid record for himself as a soldier, and was in the same company and regiment with his brother-in-law, Donald Gray. For many years he was engaged in farming near Bass Lake. Afterwards he was in the employ of G. D. McArthur for a long time as a machinery salesman. Some ten years ago he secured a position as guard of the Treasury building, which he held at the time of his death. He discharged his duties faithfully, and was well-liked by all the officials at the national capital. A few hours after receipt of the sad news M.A. Alvey, son of the deceased, and Mrs. D. Gray, a sister, took the east-bound train for Washington to attend the funeral. In compliance with a request made by Mr. Alvey before his death the remains were interred in Arlington Cemetery. Mr. Alvey leaves a wife and three children, one son and two daughters, besides a large circle of friends to mourn his death. During a long residence in this city he was highly esteemed as a citizen. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved relatives in their sorrow.
