Mr. Giles Allen Appleby departed this life on Monday, March 24, 2008 at home in Columbia, SC after an extended illness.
Mr. Appleby was born February 19, 1936 in Hampton County, the son of the late Clinton Giles and Elizabeth DeLoach Appleby. He was a graduate of Estill High School, attended Spartanburg Methodist College and was a member of the Army Reserves from 1958 until 1981. He was Vice President of Kahn and Company, Inc. of Savannah, Georgia where he worked for 48 years before retiring in 2002. Mr. Appleby was presented with the distinguished first annual Vocational Awareness Award by the Savannah South Rotary Club for his years of service to Kahn and Co., Inc. He was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church in Garnett, SC.
Surviving including his four daughters, Angela Elaine and the late Walker Poston of Allendale, SC, Mary Elizabeth and William K. “Billy” Harbuck of Barnwell, SC, Alice Marie Appleby, wife of William H. “Tucker” Frederickson, and Deirdre Lucille Appleby, wife of Dr. William H. Scarbrough, III, all of Columbia, SC. Giles is also survived by three brothers, Eugene Clinton Appleby (Sybil) of Hilton Head Island, SC, James Robert “Bobby” Appleby (Betty) and Clyde E. Appleby (Gail), all of Estill, SC, 2 granddaughters, 3 grandsons, 2 great grand daughters, 5 nieces and 2 nephews. Mr. Appleby was predeceased by a sister, Catherine A. Calloway and a brother, Bert R. Appleby.
Graveside funeral services will be held Friday, March 28, 2008 at 11 AM in the Union Cemetery near Garnett, SC, conducted by Rev. Laney Brisendine.
The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service.
