Evelyn Lenore Swan was born in Salt Creek Township, Wayne County, Ohio on July 15, 1905 to Corwin H. Swan and Cora L. (Hoffman) Swan. She was raised on a farm east of Apple Creek, Ohio the eldest of 7 children, 4 of whom lived to adulthood.
Evelyn graduated from Apple Creek High School in 1923 and that summer, two days after her 18th birthday, married James Roy McComas of Wooster, Ohio. Together they had three children, Harrold, Stanley, and Sally. The first few years of their life together Evelyn followed her tradesman husband to New York State and Washington D.C. as he followed the work offered to a Master Plasterer. By the time Sally was born in the height of the Great Depression, Evelyn had returned to live on the Home Farm near Apple Creek with her parents.
Evelyn worked most of her adult life in a variety of clerical jobs ending up working for Wooster pediatrician, Dr. Charles Brant, during the 30+ years of his practice from the 1950s until his retirement in the late 1980s.
She raised her three children through the difficult conditions of the deprivation of the Depression years and the rationing of The War years first in Apple Creek, Ohio and then, when Harrold was ready to go to college, in Wooster, Ohio. All three of her children attained college degrees and pursued graduate degrees; one in Law, one in Business, and one in Education. During the 1930s and 1940s her husband continued to travel in the winter months following the work to warmer climates including the movie lots of Hollywood, California. The couple eventually divorced in 1951.
In 1961 Evelyn married Ray Gilbert, a rubber worker from Akron, Ohio with grown children of his own. Theirs was a life filled with fun and travel, and the leisure that a two income household with no children at home afforded in the 1960s. By the end of the decade Ray was ill, the bloom was off the rose, and the couple divorced.
Evelyn loved to spend time with her 3 children and 8 grandchildren and lived long enough to see 13 of her 17 great-grandchildren born. She was a long time member of the Wooster Methodist Church and sang in its choir. She played a mean game of contract bridge having begun playing in early adulthood with her long time friends from high school days always referred to as "The Girls" many of whom had also moved to Wooster. In her middle years she discovered and fell in love with Country & Western music accompanying friends in the industry to the Country Music Association Fan Fair parties in Nashville. She was a member of Eagles Aerie #555 Auxiliary in Akron, Ohio, enjoyed growing roses, and hated missing a party.
In 1985 Evelyn celebrated her 80th birthday by doing what she did every day - driving her 1971 Ford Mustang Grande (silver/black top) to work. It was not until two years late that she and "The Doctor" would lock the office doors for the last time. Evelyn retired to her Wooster home and then eventually to an apartment in the Rockynol Retirement Community in Akron, Ohio to be nearer her daughter.
Having suffered from some mild dementia as well as a few minor strokes and TIAs in her last years, Evelyn died on August 9, 1994 at the age of 89 years, 6 weeks, and 4 days. She is buried near her parents and other family members.
