William(son) Smith Mize was born about 1828 in Habersham County, GA, the son of John B. "Jack" Mize and Phebe (maiden name unknown). The family is listed in the 1830 census. Smith's father is also mentioned in the Habersham County court and land records.

By 1832, as a small child, "Smith" traveled with his family to settle in St. Clair County, Alabama. His mother, Phebe, was a founding member of the Bethel Baptist Church (organized 30 Dec 1832).

Smith's father, John B. "Jack" Mize, purchased Federal land in St. Clair County. He also privately purchased other nearby tracts of land in Branchville.

Smith's parents lived in St. Clair County the rest of their lives.

"Smith" Mize and Dorcas Stovall were married in St. Clair County, Alabama on 10 August 1845. By 1860, the family relocated to Winn Parish, Louisiana.
