Alfred Cleo McLaughlin

MURPHYSBORO -- Alfred Cleo McLaughlin, 90, passed away at 11:50 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012, in the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna.

Cleo was born Sept. 3, 1921, in Cora, the son of Murry W. and Anna Pearl Rea McLaughlin Sr.

He married Margaret "Peggy" Falkenheim on Oct. 22, 1949, in Waterloo.

Cleo was a U.S. Army veteran, who served with the 33rd Infantry Division in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.

He was a retired farmer and a member of Pate Chapel Baptist Church, VFW Post 7190 and Paul Stout American Legion Post 127, all in Murphysboro.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret "Peggy" McLaughlin of Murphysboro; children, Thomas McLaughlin of Murphysboro, Beverly (Roger) Connor of LaCenter, Ky., Sondra "Sonnie" (Dennis) Mahnken of Steeleville, Ronald McLaughlin of Murphysboro and Gregory (Charlotte) McLaughlin of Murphysboro; 10 grandchildren, Aaron Connor, Eric Connor, Curtis (Amber) Mahnken, Christa Mahnken, John Mahnken, Christopher McLaughlin, Courtney McLaughlin, Loren McLaughlin, Elaine McLaughlin and Stephanie McLaughlin; two sisters, Aleatha Mifflin of Murphysboro and Veneda Costello of St. Charles, Mo.; and one sister-in-law, Helen Williams of Murphysboro.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Frank, Fred and Murry W. Jr.; and two sisters, Hyacinth Krawczyk and Ann Crisler.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, in Pate Chapel Baptist Church in Murphysboro with Pastor John Pitchford and the Rev. Jeff Gee officiating. Burial will be in Ava Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the church.

The preferred forms of remembrance are memorials to Pate Chapel Baptist Church Building Fund.
