Mary Jane Sturgis Bennett was born in Rock Hill, York County, South Carolina to Thomas White and Margaret Shillinglaw Sturgis, and she was the oldest of 14 children. She married Ross Bennett in York County, South Carolina and moved to Crockett, Houston County, Texas in 1881 along with her children and parents. According to family history, she was a small woman, barely five feet tall, with blue eyes. Although her farmhouse no longer stands on the Hall Bluff's Road, the daffodils that she planted still bloom every Spring. Mary Jane died in 1929 and is buried in the Glenwood Cemetery in an unmarked grave next to her husband Ross.
